Project
Geotechnical Design and Evaluation & Interpretation at Section of Vertical Axis 70 of Egnatia Highway: “Xanthi – Echinos – Greek-Bulgarian borders”
Location: Thrace, Greece
Client: Egnatia Odos S.A.
Date: 2012 – 2015
Construction costs: approx. € 50 million
Technical Details
The project involves the design of a 16.4 km road section from Melivoia Bypass to the Greek-Bulgarian border, incorporating necessary design modifications to the existing constructed segment. It is part of Vertical Axis 70 of Egnatia Odos: “Xanthi-Echinos-Greek-Bulgarian border.”
OBERMEYER’s scope of work includes providing geotechnical engineering services during the design phase. The project includes the supervision, evaluation, and interpretation of 50 boreholes, with a total investigated depth of 1,050 meters.
The design covers 39 earthworks (cuts, embankments, reinforced embankments), the foundation design of 40 raoad bridges, and the design checking of two tunnels. Earthworks are being constructed under challenging geotechnical conditions, including recent landslide soil formations.

Services Provided
The scope of services includes the supervision of geotechnical investigations of 50 boreholes, elaboration of geotechnical interpretation reports, design of earthworks and foundation design of bridges (piles, shafts, strip footings), checking of two tunnels.
