Project

Construction of the New Bridge on the “Rhodes – Lindos“ National Road at the Makari River Location

Location: Rhodes Island, Greece
Client: Doxiadis Associates
Date: 2020-2021
Construction costs: approx. € 5,5 million
Technical Details

The project involves the construction of a new bridge over the Makaris River, located on the eastern coast of Rhodes, approximately 36 km from the capital city. The new bridge is part of the “Rhodes – Lindos” national road and serves the high vehicle traffic, especially during the tourist season. The construction of a new bridge is deemed necessary due to severe flooding and the scouring of the piers, which, combined with the presence of an enclosed drainage pipeline, led to the collapse of the existing bridge in autumn 2019.

At the same time, the new bridge is linked to the widening of the National Road, which includes the addition of one extra lane per direction and a central median strip. The bridge features four spans, with a total length of 121 m and a width of 12.5 m. The bridge superstructure consists of precast prestressed beams, while its support on the piers and abutments is implemented through bearings. A deep foundation solution with piles is adopted.
