Project
Checking of Final Design of the 2nd Cross-border Road Bridge in the area of the border crossing “Kipi – Ipsala”
Location: Greek – Turkish border
Client: Egnatia Odos S.A.
Date: 2023 – 2025
Construction costs: approx. € 70 million
Technical Details
The project concerns the new cross-border road bridge “Kipi – Ipsala”, located at the Greek-Turkish border. The bridge is part of the “European Transport Corridor Thessaloniki – Istanbul”, constructed on the frame of the agreement between Greece and Turkey. The bridge superstructure’s width is 31.5 m and the total length is 841 m.
Two discrete structural configurations are identified:
– The main, extradosed 3-spanned bridge of total length 400 m, above “Evros” river. The superstructure consists of 2 prestressed reinforced concrete, parallel box girders, transversely interconnected with crossbeams. A concrete slab connects the box girders.
– 2 access bridges of a length of 150 m on the Greek side and 291 m on the Turkish side. Both bridges are constructed of precast pre-tensioned T-beams within situ concrete slab.
The superstructure of the main bridge is supported on 2 pylons, symmetrically positioned on both sides of the borderline. The designed deep pile – foundation secures stability.

Services Provided
OBERMEYER HELLAS was assigned the checking of the final design in 2 stages. OBERMEYER HELLAS also supported Egnatia Odos by participating in the Joint Planning and Monitoring Project Committee (JPMPC) meeting. OBERMEYER formally approved the design for implementation in 2025.
